
Getting Your Glass Annealing Right
If you’re running a glass container line, you know the drill. You need that perfect temperature soak to get rid of internal stress, or you’re looking at a lot of wasted product. Here’s the thing: we don’t just ship you heating elements and wish you luck. We look at the whole thermal profile. If your lamps are burning out way too fast or you’re finding annoying cold spots in the lehr, it usually comes down to a mismatch. Your wattage density and your line speed just aren’t talking to each other. The balancing act of power and voltage We build these elements to handle specific voltage loads so the heat actually spreads evenly. Now, cranking up the wattage per centimeter does increase the heat flux—which is great for moving more glass through the line faster. But you have to be careful. If you jam a high-wattage tube into a tight housing without enough airflow, you’re basically cooking your connectors. Instead of just over-specifying the wattage and praying it doesn’t blow, we usually suggest tuning the voltage to get the output exactly where it needs to be. Materials that actually last We use high-purity quartz for the envelope because it can take the constant heating and cooling without cracking. Then there’s the connector. Whether you’re using an R7s or a custom pin, that choice is what keeps the element steady when things start vibrating or expanding from the heat. A loose fit at the terminal is a recipe for arcing. We’ve seen too many setups where a bad connector choice caused the whole thing to fail right at the seal. It’s a small detail that causes a huge headache. How it works in the real world These elements use short-wave infrared energy to punch through the glass wall. It’s always a trade-off. High-intensity elements are fast, but they’re hard on your power supply and your cooling fans. That’s why we prefer to come on-site. A data sheet is fine, but it doesn’t tell you how heat actually moves through your specific machine. We’d rather look at your actual heat soak and tell you plainly if you need new elements or if you just need to fix your airflow.
