
Putting Infrared Heaters in Your Pergola (Without Them Breaking)
Let’s be honest: putting a heater in an outdoor pergola is a bit of a gamble. Most units aren’t built for the real world. You get a little bit of rain or some heavy morning dew, and suddenly you’ve got a short circuit or a burnt-out filament. It’s frustrating. That’s why we spent so much time obsessing over the housing. We wanted something that actually handles the weather instead of just pretending to.
The Battle Against Water
Here is the problem with water and heat: they don’t get along. If a few droplets hit a red-hot heating element, you get these “cold spots.” That temperature swing is enough to crack the quartz glass right down the middle. To stop that, we built a sealed chassis. It’s rated to block splashes and direct spray, and it’s shaped to push water away from the electrical parts. Then there’s the mist. That’s the sneaky stuff. Humid air loves to settle on cold contacts when the heater is off. When you flip the switch, that moisture can cause the current to arc, which basically fries your wiring. We added a moisture-barrier seal around the lamp sockets to keep that from happening. It keeps the internals dry, even when the air feels like a sauna.
Making it Last
We wanted the heat to hit you where you’re sitting, but we didn’t want the electronics to bake themselves. We use high-grade reflectors that stay put and don’t warp, no matter how much the temperature swings outside. One thing to watch out for: wind. Pergolas shake. If your mounting brackets aren’t tight, the heater will vibrate against the beams. Over time, that rubs the protective coating right off. We reinforced the casing so it can take a beating from the wind without losing its seal.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Because these units are built like tanks to survive the rain, they’re heavier than the stuff you’d put in a living room. Just double-check that your pergola beams can handle the extra weight before you start drilling. Also, since the casing is sealed tight to keep water out, the air doesn’t move around the back of the unit as easily. Give the heater about 10cm of breathing room from the ceiling. It keeps the housing from overheating and keeps everything running smooth.
