
Why Your Infrared Heating Elements Keep Shorting Out (And How to Stop It)
If you’ve ever swapped out a replacement infrared element only to have it die again shortly after, you aren’t alone. Most of these things fail at the same spot: the lead-in wire. Here is what’s actually happening. When you crank a heater up to peak temperature, that heat doesn’t just stay put in the quartz tube. It crawls backward, right toward the electrical connections. Standard seals just can’t handle that. The insulation bakes, it cracks, and then—pop—you’ve got a short circuit. The real problem with cheap assemblies I see this all the time with the low-grade stuff. If the seal between the tube and the wire isn’t airtight and rated for high heat, moisture and oxygen sneak inside. That makes the tungsten filament oxidize way faster than it should. But the bigger issue is the “heat soak.” It turns the wire jacket brittle. Once that plastic starts flaking off, you’re left with live wires sitting in a high-heat environment. It’s a disaster waiting to happen. Why the sealing actually matters To get a real IP65 rating, the seal has to be absolute. No gaps. We use a glass-to-metal seal that basically locks the wire into the tube. It keeps the moisture out and stops the heat from migrating too far down the wire. Generic elements usually rely on basic glues or loose gaskets. They just don’t hold up. We prefer a high-temperature compression seal. It stays tight even when the heater is cycling between freezing and scorching, which keeps the electricity exactly where it belongs—away from the chassis. A quick heads-up on installation There is one trade-off: better sealing makes the lead wires a bit stiffer. Because of that, please don’t bend these wires at sharp angles when you’re installing them. If you force a tight bend, you risk cracking that seal and killing your IP65 protection. Just give the wires a gentle radius. Make sure your mounting brackets have plenty of breathing room so there’s no mechanical stress on the seal point. Your heater will thank you for it.
