
How to actually pick the right heater for your bathroom
Looking for a bathroom heater? Here is the first thing you need to know: bigger isn’t always better. If you just buy the most powerful lamp on the shelf, you’re going to waste a ton of electricity and probably turn your bathroom into a sauna. But if you go too small? You’ll still be shivering when you step out of the shower. It’s all about finding that sweet spot.
Getting the wattage right
Think about the actual space you’re heating. If you’ve just got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a 400W to 600W lamp is plenty. You don’t need more because the heat hits you almost instantly in a space that small. For a medium-sized bathroom (between 4m² and 8m²), you’re looking at 800W to 1200W. Once you get into those big master baths or open wet rooms over 10m², you might want a couple of 1200W units or one big high-output array to make sure there aren’t any chilly corners. I always suggest short-wave infrared for this. Why? Because it doesn’t waste time heating up the air. It warms your skin and the surfaces around you directly. It feels like stepping into a beam of sunlight, even if your exhaust fan is running full blast.
The “Water” Problem (IP55)
Bathrooms are pretty brutal on electronics. Steam, splashes, the whole deal. That’s why you want something with an IP55 rating. In plain English, that just means the housing is built to keep dust and water jets away from the wiring. It’s what keeps the unit from shorting out when the shower gets steamy. One quick tip on installation: high-wattage lamps get hot—really hot—where the wires connect. If you’re tucking a 1500W unit into a tight ceiling, make sure there’s some breathing room. If the air can’t move, the thermal cutout will trip and shut the whole thing down.
Where to put it
You don’t actually need to heat every single inch of the room. Instead, aim the lamps at the “cold zones.” Put one right where you step out of the shower or over the vanity. It’s much more efficient to warm the spot where you’re actually standing than to try and heat the entire volume of the room. And for the love of your electric bill, use a timer or a humidity sensor. That way, the heat kills itself once the room is comfortable, rather than running all morning.
