
How to Pick the Right Infrared Heater for Your Bathroom
When you’re looking for an infrared lamp for the bathroom, the instinct is usually to just go for the most powerful one on the shelf. But that’s actually a mistake. You don’t want a blast furnace; you just want to stop shivering while you’re getting ready in the morning. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between the size of your room and the materials you’ve got on the walls. Getting the wattage right Think about your floor space first. If you’ve just got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a small 400W to 600W shortwave lamp does the trick. These are great because they warm you and your towel directly, rather than trying to heat up all the air in the room. For a standard mid-sized bathroom (4m² to 8m²), you’ll probably want something in the 800W to 1200W range. Keep in mind that things like exhaust fans or leaving the door cracked open let heat escape, so you need a bit more muscle here. Now, if you’ve got a massive luxury bath or a huge wet room over 10m², one lamp won’t cut it. You’re better off with a couple of 1500W units spread out. Just be careful—if you put a massive heater in a tiny closet of a bathroom, you’ll end up roasting yourself and wasting a ton of electricity. Where to put it (and the safety stuff) Infrared is all about line-of-sight. If the lamp can’t “see” you, you won’t feel the heat. I’d suggest mounting yours so the beam hits exactly where you usually stand. Also, this is a bathroom, so water is everywhere. Make sure your lamp is rated IPX4 or higher. You really don’t want steam or a stray splash hitting the circuitry and shorting the whole thing out. The “Hot Spot” problem Here is the trade-off: higher wattage means you feel the heat instantly. A 1500W lamp is fast. Really fast. But there’s a catch. If the wattage is too high for the space, you get these annoying “hot spots.” You’ll feel like you’re standing under a heat lamp at a buffet—scorching hot right under the bulb, but freezing cold the second you step two inches to the left. The goal is a gentle, even warmth. Balance the power with how well your room is insulated, and you’ll get that cozy feeling without the sweat.
