
Why Your Coop Heater Keeps Shorting Out (And How We Fixed It)
If you’ve ever run a heater in a chicken coop, you know it’s a brutal environment. Between the constant dampness and those ammonia fumes, it’s basically a chemistry experiment designed to destroy electronics. Most people think the heating element is what gives out first. But honestly? It’s almost always the lead-wire seal. When that seal fails, moisture sneaks its way into the quartz tube or the connection point. Once that happens, the insulation burns out, and you’ve got a dead short on your hands. Not exactly what you want when you’re trying to keep your birds warm in the middle of January. The hidden problem with “cheap” seals Here’s the thing: a lot of consumer heaters just use basic glue or low-temp silicone to plug the hole where the wire enters. That works fine in a living room, but not here. In a high-wattage infrared setup, heat doesn’t just go forward—it travels backward through the wires. It creates this thermal bridge that cooks the sealant. Cheap stuff hardens, cracks, and then—boom—you’ve got a micro-crack. Moisture gets in, the insulation turns to carbon, and the whole thing shorts out. Doing it the right way We do things a bit differently. Instead of just “gluing it shut,” we use high-temp fluorosilicone and specialized resins that can handle up to 250°C without breaking a sweat. Our process has a few steps to make sure it actually lasts. First, we use a mechanical crimp so the wire isn’t under tension. Then, we use a vacuum-sealed potting compound. Why the vacuum? Because air pockets are the enemy. They trap heat, which essentially “cooks” the material from the inside out. By getting the air out, we stop that premature failure before it starts. One quick tip for installation There is a trade-off, though. Because our seals are so heavy-duty, the wire exit is a bit stiffer than what you might be used to. Whatever you do,don’t bend those wires sharplyright next to the seal. If you force a tight bend to make it fit in a tiny space, you might actually crack the potting compound and ruin the Waterproof seal. Just leave yourself a generous loop of wire when you’re wiring it up. It takes up a little more room, but it’s the secret to a heater that actually survives the winter.
