
Getting Your Voltage Right in Bottle Annealing
If you’ve ever moved a production line across a border, you know the headache. You move from a US plant running 110V or 480V over to Canada where it’s 575V, or maybe somewhere in Europe, and suddenly your power specs are a mess. The last thing you want is a floor cluttered with those massive, ugly external transformers. They take up way too much space and just feel like a band-aid fix. That’s why we just build our infrared heaters to match your local grid from the start. Simple.
It’s all about the filament
Voltage isn’t just some number on a spec sheet. It actually changes how the heater behaves. Here’s the thing: a lamp built for 575V is a completely different beast than one for 110V. To keep the heat consistent, we tweak the length and thickness of the tungsten filament. If you try to cheat and plug a 480V lamp into a 575V circuit, you’re going to have a bad day. The filament will likely pop in a matter of hours. On the flip side, if the voltage is too low, the heat won’t penetrate the glass, and your cycle times will crawl.
The gear we use
We house everything in high-purity quartz glass. We do this so the shortwave infrared radiation can fly right through the tube without getting trapped. It means the heat hits the bottle directly, which is exactly where you want it. Depending on what you’re running, you can go with clear quartz or coated tubes. The coated ones shift the heat to a longer wave. It’s great for thicker glass, though it does take a bit longer to get up to temperature.
Making it work in your shop
Matching the voltage to your grid makes the wiring a breeze. You can plug them straight into your controllers and get moving. But a quick heads-up: high-voltage, high-wattage tubes gethot. Really hot. You need to make sure your furnace housing and cooling fans can handle that extra heat. If they can’t, you risk warping your heater brackets, which is a pain to fix. We design these as drop-in replacements, so you can swap them out quickly and get your line running again without wasting a whole afternoon.
