
Getting IR Heating Right for Mobile Glass Repair
When you’re trying to squeeze a heating element into a mobile glass repair bracket, you’re basically fighting for every single millimeter. It’s a tight squeeze. And since you’re usually running on portable power, you can’t just throw a massive heater at the problem and hope for the best. You need something that hits the score line hard and fast, without melting the bracket around it. The struggle with power and space To get the kind of heat you need for resin curing or softening glass in such a tiny setup, we go with short-wave infrared (SWIR) quartz elements. These things are great because they pack a ton of energy into a very narrow band. By shortening the filament and cranking up the current density, we can keep the heat high even if the lamp is only a few centimeters long. But there’s a catch. If you push too many watts through a low-voltage circuit, your wires start to get dangerously hot. To stop that, we use heavier gauge lead wires. It prevents those annoying voltage drops that would otherwise slow your heating speed to a crawl. Dealing with the heat We use high-purity quartz envelopes so the IR energy actually gets out. But the real trick is keeping that heat focused. You don’t want your plastic or aluminum housing warping while you work. We usually add a reflector shield or a selective coating to push the energy forward, right where it belongs. Of course, this creates its own problem: thermal stress. These high-density lamps get hot. If you don’t have a decent heat sink or some airflow, the lamp will burn out way too soon. When we spec the cooling fans, we look at the actual surface temperature of the lamp, not just the air around it. That’s the only way to make sure the tool doesn’t eat itself. Putting it all together For the mobile rigs, we use compact connectors like the Sk15 or R7s. They keep the footprint tiny and make it easy to swap a lamp out if one fails. We also wire everything with high-temperature silicone leads. Regular insulation would just melt. The result is a heating setup you can just drop into a handheld frame without needing to plug into a massive power grid. It just works.
