You have to get that glass warm before it hits the nip rollers, or you’re looking at thermal shock and coating that just won’t stick. But here’s the problem: if you’re working with wide-format lines, the standard lamps you find in a catalog usually aren’t enough. They’re too short. That’s why we build custom infrared heating units that stretch past 3 meters. We make sure the heater actually matches the size of your web.
The Headache of Going Big (3m+)
When you scale a heater up to 3 meters or more, things get tricky. You start dealing with voltage drops and thermal expansion. We don’t just wire a bunch of lamps together and hope for the best. If we did, the center of your glass would be scorching while the edges stayed cool, and your coating thickness would start drifting all over the place. To stop that, we carefully balance the electrical load across several circuits. It keeps the heat steady from one end to the other.
Why We Stick with Quartz
We use high-purity quartz tubes because they can handle the raw heat these lines need. Instead of using a bunch of small modules with gaps in between—which creates those annoying “cold spots”—we build these as continuous arrays. You get a solid wall of IR energy. Plus, we use heavy-duty reflectors to bounce every bit of heat back onto the glass. It’s more efficient, and it keeps your power bill from spiking.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
These units are great because they replace those clunky, fragmented arrays, but they aren’t indestructible. A 3-meter piece of quartz is fragile. If someone bumps it during installation, it’s gone. To fix this, we build reinforced mounting frames to keep everything safe while you’re wiring it up. And one last tip: these arrays put out a lot of ambient heat. A lot. Make sure your exhaust hoods are actually strong enough to pull that hot air away. If they aren’t, you’ll end up frying your control electronics, and that’s a headache nobody wants.
