
Stop Wasting Energy on Your Glass Annealing
Nobody likes it when glass breaks for no apparent reason. We’ve all been there. To stop that from happening, you need a precise thermal soak, but if you’re using those old-school resistive ovens, you’re basically paying to heat the air in the room along with the glass. It’s a waste. That’s why we switched to shortwave infrared (IR) lamps. Instead of heating the whole chamber and hoping the glass catches up, these lamps hit the glass surface directly. It cuts the ramp-up time way down. Your power bill? It actually starts to look reasonable. How it actually works Here’s the thing: shortwave IR runs hotter than the medium or long-wave stuff. Because of that, the energy actually sinks into the glass rather than just bouncing off. You aren’t waiting around for the air to get hot. The photons go straight to the material. It’s a faster soak, which means your power controllers aren’t working overtime. It’s just more efficient. The gear and the trade-offs We pack a lot of wattage into a small space to keep the footprint tiny. We use compact quartz tubes to create an intense heat flux. But there’s a catch. When you’re dealing with that much heat in a small area, your reflector alignment has to be spot on. If those reflectors get warped, you’re just heating up the metal frame of your machine instead of the glass. It’s a small detail, but it’s the difference between a win and a waste. Keeping it running We designed these as drop-in replacements. They use standard connectors, so you don’t have to rebuild your entire line just to upgrade. We also use quartz envelopes because they can handle the shock of rapid heating and cooling without cracking. But you have to baby them a little. Keep the tubes clean. Seriously. A few fingerprints or some dust on the quartz can create hot spots, and that’s how you burn out a lamp prematurely. Stick to a strict cleaning schedule. If your wiring is solid and your voltage is stable, you’ll see a real drop in the kWh you spend per ton of glass. It’s a much simpler way to work.
